About
The Annunciation depicts the Virgin Mary sitting on her bed as she looks a mysterious source of light. It captures the moment when the Angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will bear the Son of God. Tanner created this work after returning to Paris after a journey to Palestine and Egypt. Mary is depicted as a young girl and dressed in simple clothes. The light source represents the angel Gabriel, he lights up the otherwise dark room and highlights Mary, her simple living, and the interior architecture in the background. Tanner entered this painting in the 1898 Paris Salon exhibition and it was his first work to be purchased by an American museum when the Philadelphia Museum of Art acquired it in 1899.
