About
Sand Dunes at Sunset, Atlantic City is a landscape painting of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Tanner visited Atlantic City many times during the 1870s and 1880s in search of employment opportunities and captured the beautiful landscape. He captures the scene in the late afternoon night, as the golden sunlight shines down on the dunes highlighting the different sand forms and their shades. The wind blows through the dunes sweeping the small patches of grass. The ocean can be seen in the background of the painting and the clouds above the ocean cover the sun as evening befalls the scene. This painting is the first painting by an African American artist to be a part of the White House Collection.
