About
Portrait of the Artist’s Mother is a portrait of Henry Ossawa Tanner’s mother. She is depicted sitting on a rocket chair with a fan and looks to the left of the painting. She is sitting alone in the portrait and her black dress contrasts the brown background and wooden chair, which focuses the viewer’s attention on her body pose and face. She expresses strength but also a sensitive and thoughtful personality. The painting was Tanner’s celebration of his recent success in Europe and America and to reflect upon his parent’s initial opposition to his chosen career.
