About
Les Invalides, Paris shows a street view of the Les Invalides and the urban scene surrounding the building. In the foreground of the painting, three people gaze at the building, possibly reflecting Tanner’s position as well. Tanner takes inspiration from impressionist painting and uses small brushstrokes to capture the different details of the building and the landscape around the area. Les Invalides was a complex that consists of Napoleon’s tomb and the Hôtel Invalides, a home for disabled military veterans. Thus, the choice of the landmark may reflect Tanner’s interest in social injustice and the urban framework to help those in need.
