About
Flight into Egypt depicts the Holy Family’s fleeing King Herod’s assassins. It was one of many artworks that Tanner painted this theme as it was his favorite story. This painting shows the influence of impressionism on Tanner’s work. Using various colors, he painted the changing colors of the sky indicating the urgency of the Holy Family’s action and the mystical elements of the story. On the right of the painting, two people can be seen riding donkeys on the paved road surrounded by a vast landscape. This painting also expressed Tanner’s sensitivity to issues such as escape from persecution and the migration of African Americans from the South to the North.
