About
Flight into Egypt depicts the Holy Family fleeing King Herod’s assassins after the birth of Christ. The family rides in a dimly lit alleyway and Virgin Mary holds her baby whilst Joseph rides behind her. A man walks past them with a lamp that highlights the family and provides a light source in an otherwise dark painting. It was Tanner’s favorite biblical story and was one of his many depictions of the theme. The influence of impressionism is evident in the painting, as he uses distinct brushstrokes to depict the forms of the subjects. This painting also expressed Tanner’s sensitivity to issues such as escape from persecution and the migration of African Americans from the South to the North.
