About
Fisherman’s Devotions, Étaples depicts the view of a coastal town from the sea. In the foreground in a fisherman’s boat and a small path leading up to an altar of Christ on the Cross. Behind the altar is a large building. The artwork is painted in the impressionist style, using small brushstrokes to depict forms. Although Tanner did not paint the details, the forms are recognizable in their universality and religiously. The blue color palette is found in many of his other paintings, linking many of his religious paintings together.
