About
Entrance to the Casbah depicts the street leading up to a gate to the Casbah. Inside the fortress is the traditional quarter of the city. Tanner used the impressionist to capture the charm of the street. He emphasized the aged nature and degradation of the gate by including green moss around the corners of the wall and fortress. This contrasts the stark whiteness of the gate and the street. One person is seen riding out of the gate and one other subject is seen walking into the gate. On the left, three people are clustered near the wall. The painting evokes a sense of calm and serenity in an otherwise busy area of the city.
