About
Daniel in the Lions’ Den depicts the Old Testament story of the punishment of Daniel in which he was thrown into a cell with lions and the miracle of the lions sparing his life. Tanner received recognition for this painting at the Paris Salon in 1896. Tanner painted the scene with quiet serenity and spirituality which contrast the image of the threat of lions in an enclosed space with the subject. He paints the scene in a dark cell with a dramatic light shining on David to highlight his role in the story. The cool tones of the painting point to the somber nature of the story.
