About
Abraham’s Oak depicts the ancient tree mentioned in the Old Testament in which Abram pitched a tent and built an altar to the Lord of Israel. The tree stands tall in the misty sky like a monument or part of a memory. In the bottom left, two subjects are seen walking towards the viewer. He painted this artwork as a memory of the pilgrimage site when he journeyed to the Holy Land twice in the late 1800s. The influence of impressionism on Tanner is evident in the painting, in which he used small brushstrokes to capture the mist of the sky and the details of the tree and landscape. Tanner resonated with Abraham’s story as an expatriate who spent most of his artistic career in France and felt the call to leave his country to pursue a career in a foreign land.
