About
Matisse is playing with the traditional elements of a traditional portrait and adding a few elements of modern style. For example the woman’s face is made from blocks of color rather than being shaded naturalistically. The thin layers of paint in the background reveal Matisse’s swirling brushstrokes adding more energy to the work. Matisse’s female sitter sits comfortably in a wooden chair looking out to the viewer with bright blue eyes. Her blouse is decorated with bright flowers and swirls of embroidery giving this painting a light hearted aura. The sitter is most likely Lydia Delectorskaya, Matisse’s assistant and companion who often modeled for him.
