About
Matisse’s superb command of color and pattern is on display in this work. This piece is writhing and full of energy. with no straight line in the entire surface. The woman in the center, lounging in the purple coat is Lydia Delectorskaya, Matisse’s assistant and companion. Her monumental size, brightly colored costume, and the thick black line around her make her an anchor in this otherwise overwhelming room.
