About

This is among Matisse’s final group of oil paintings, executed in the time he moved inland to Vence to escape the bombardment of Nice during the second World War. The series of paintings includes the same subject executed in different color combinations. ‘The intricate details of his Nice interiors have been replaced in this painting by a new freedom in his brushwork and drawing, as well as an increased boldness in his color harmonies’ (Minneapolis Museum of Art). The vivid yellow walls in this version do nothing to enliven the tone of the two female figures whose plain faces appear to be in somber contemplation. This telling tone could be an effect of the war which surrounded the artist and his family.
