About
This painting is a work in transition, something indicated by the dates at the bottom next to Matisse’s signature, 1929-31. The process of the artist is observable in the hesitancy of his brushstrokes. The figure of the woman seems to have grown to fill the space with the large skirt ballooning from her narrow hem. Unlike the majority of Matisse’s works, where figures are often lost in the complex designs and patterns that fill his interiors, this figure dominates the room and is the singular focal point of the work.
