About
Light floods this canvas and creates an energetic and almost spiritual experience. The emotional power of this work is especially poignant since just one year before this Matisse considered giving up on being an artist. The forms in this work are painted in a soft, Impressionist, style with the gesture of the artist’s brush left visible. As the eye follows the path towards the back their eye comes to the figure of Matisse’s wife, Amelie, in a blue Japanese robe.
