About

This intimate portrait of Matisse’s companion Lydia Delectorskaya was completed after the artist had taken a trip to the Cone household. Etta and Claribel Cone were sisters from Baltimore where were Matisse’s most important clients and owned several of his works. Seeing this collection reenergized the artist’s passion for oil painting and ‘he began to make works with the Cone Collection in mind.’ The fluidity of the brushstrokes give the impression of spontaneity, but Matisse had re-worked the pose several times and sent images of the process to Etta Cone.
