About
This painting is a wonderful example of the fluidity of Matisse’s later works. He has filled the canvas with violent slashes and swirls of vibrant color. His handling of paint in this work is exemplary of the Fauvist, French for ‘wild beast,’ style Matisse was famous for. The model’s face is illustrated in a few simple strokes and seems to be calm amidst ‘cacophony of colorful flowers and foliage that surrounds her.’
