About
Matisse often returned to the traditional genre of still life, which he dabbled in so often in his early artistic career, to add touches of modern technique and artistic innovation. In this still life every object is contained within thick black streaks of paint. This, and the the flat panels of grey and green that dominate the background the background, destroys the traditional one-point perspective and flattens the work. No longer is the picture a window onto a new reality, it is paint on canvas and an object in it’s own rite. The painting is deceptively simple. The sharp angles of the tables, windows, and frame are expertly contrasted with the curves of the bust, rug, and plate. These contrasts create an interesting rhythm as the eye travels across the canvas.
