About
Matisse captured this woman’s energy in his every line of this portrait. The lines ripple and pulsate across the page. Her hair is bundled on her head, with each layer rippling out from the center, and the lines then calmly trace the woman’s oval face. The collar of her dress spreads out like petals from a flower. While her face is simple, with a few thin lines designating the features, Matisse captured his models’ exuberant character in her wide smile.
