About
The woman in this painting is largely believed to by Matisse’s young love Lydia Delectorskaya, whom he met in 1935. The background is ‘no more than a pattern’ with all the focus on the elegant yet distorted figure. The brushstrokes almost lovingly caress the elongated figure, embodying the energy and warmth of a new love. This monumental and abstracted figure is indicative of a style Matisse would pursue for the rest of his artistic career. (http://www.henrimatisse.org/pink-nude.jsp)
