About

Matisse presents a woman in a flowing robe and large white culottes. While she is not exposed, her pose is sultry and intriguing. This inviting tone is aided by the cool color palette of blues and soft pinks. The thin layers of paint, a typical aspect of Matisse’s work, give way to show the artist’s working process. The multiple black lines emerging from the bottom left corner are the best example of this. Each line built off of another until Matisse was finally satisfied with the proportion. All of the edges on this work have been softened, as if Matisse only dabbed the canvas with the bristles of the brush.
