About

This woodcut is a part of a series of six that were created in collaboration with Tyler’s Graphics, an art workshop. Helen Frankenthaler began the series in 1995, three years before completing this second woodcut. The title of the woodcut print is an homage to the style in which they were carved, by the ukiyo-e trained Japanese carver, Yasuyuki Shibata. Beginning in the 1980s, Frankenthaler’s works of art appear to be calmer, using muted colors and relaxed brushwork, as demonstrated by this woodcut print depicting a tree in an array of 41 colors.
