About
This oil painting is a prime example of O’Keeffe’s close-up floral works, depicting magnified flowers that are a stylistic combination between precisionism and abstraction. Color gradations between pale purple, pale green, yellow, and white create the folds of the enlarged petals of the white iris. The separation between flower and background is ambiguous due to the pale tone employed in both the foreground and the background. A close study of the details of the stamens and stigma contrasted with the smooth and simplified shapes of the petals captures a charactertically O’Keeffe floral painting.
