About

This oil painting appears to be a transitional piece, as it prefaces the brilliant colors of O’Keeffe’s New Mexico landscapes but also alludes to her earlier experiences producing artwork at Lake George. A dramatically large and bright white sun emerges from a sea of rich vermillion hills. The yellow rings of the sun and its giant halo of light starkly contrast the dark background against which it rises. The color composition of this landscape painting is a distinctive charactertistic of her later work done of the American Southwest landscape.
