About
This oil painting of an open clam shell is a principle example of an O'Keeffe still-life: a magnified and central form comprising stylistic elements of both precisionism and abstraction. A sliver of the inside of an empty clam shell is visible through the ajar shell. Tonal gradations of dark and light grays, pale blues, and whites define the silvery and smooth outside of the shell. Warmer hues add depth and shade to the inside of the shell, framing a dark center which represents the hinge area of the clam.
