About
This is a prime example of O'Keeffe's landscapes of the American Southwest in a style unique to her, described as a combination between abstraction and precisionism. An oversized snail shell appears to be embedded in the face of a red hill, taking up the majority of the canvas. The bright vermillion, yellow, and white hues of the painting testify to O'Keeffe's fascination with the intense colors of the hills and canyons of Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. This painting serves as an example of O'Keeffe's mastery of Wassily Kandinsky's triangle and circle as "something more than geometry."
