About

This painting is one of a series of depictions of the New York landscape, intended to celebrate the American phenomenon of skyscrapers — a symbol of modernity. O’Keeffe painted this building after she moved to an apartment on the 30th floor of the Shelton Hotel with her new husband, the views from which were an expanse of the most famous American city. This precisionist-style representation of the American Radiator Building uses sharp contrast between dark shadows and bright whites to depict the electric light which illuminated the building at night. O’Keeffe stated that she painted this series to show the “mystique of skyscrapers.”
