About
Georgia O'Keeffe painted this while on a nine week trip to Hawai'i, commissioned to produce work that was to be pineapple-themed, for the Hawaiian Pineapple Company, later named Dole Food Company.
O;Keeffe was already known for her close-ups of flowers. Here, she chose to depict a papaya, Carica papaya, native to Mexico and Central America, and considered to be a competitor to Dole's pineapples. The papaya can grow up to 26 feet in height.
