About
A work from O'Keeffe's time as a teacher in South Carolina, this charcoal drawing was done in her early period of experimentation with abstract forms. In 1916, a friend showed some of O'Keeffe's drawings to photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Stieglitz developed an intense interest in O'Keeffe's work, emboldening her to further experiment.
Much of the pictoral space in this work is populated with abstract forms, lines, and variations of shading, all of which interact with each other to create a dynamic composition.
