About
As part of a series of six paintings executed by O’Keeffe of the North American flower at Lake George, this painting is the culmination of O’Keeffe’s studies of Jack in the Pulpit. Painted in its most elemental form, the magnified spadix of the flower is represented by a dark, cropped oblong, delineated from the dark background by an echo of white light. Tonal gradations of white and black add depth to the shapes and eventually blend into burgundy stripes that flank the central figure.
