About
As part of a series of six paintings done by O’Keeffe studying the North American flower, this painting is her fourth work of Jack in the Pupil. Following suite with O’Keeffe’s unique floral work, an enlarged spathe encompasses its spadix, with an echo of light delineating the forms. A vertical stripe of white bisects the dark purple spathe. The flower is positioned against a stack of deep green foliage, which stands out against the blue background that is confined to the four corners of the canvas.
