About
This oil painting was done at the D.H. Lawrence Ranch in Taos county, New Mexico. O'Keeffe visited the ranch when she stayed at the Taos art colony. O'Keeffe was lying down on the same bench on which D.H. Lawrence wrote when she painted this large ponderosa pine tree. A rich burgundy trunck reaches from one corner of the canvas to meet with its winding branches and dark green foliage at the center. The dark hues of the tree sharply contrast the starry and blue sky in the background. Due to the perspective of this painting, the correct orientation of this painting has never been known. The grandiosity of the tree and beauty of the night sky convey O'Keeffe's emotion in this still-life.
