About
Nine roughneck fishermen haul a wide-planked, orange bottomed ‘dory’ down to the sandy beach towards the agitated waterfront. In the background, storm clouds whirl and a few white horses begin to peak. Bellows thickly applied the oil paint directly onto the panel, producing a surface as rough as the scene. This painting technique permits Bellows to give the rocky coastline the rugged appearance it needs, the clouds the density they need and the ocean the depth it needs to make this painting feel as foreboding as it does. Bellows painted this scene in an inlet between two islands in Maine. This painting is part of a larger series of paintings completed by Bellows of the Maine coastline.
