About
Bellow began painting his wife and children in the later years of his life. Here he paints his much adored wife, Emma. This painting’s background blends effortlessly with the piano in dark tones of blue and black. In contrast, Emma’s face is highlighted as she turns towards the painter, her husband. A ruffled sleeve lies across the keys, with one lonely finger sitting on a key. Her hair is up and off of her face. She is wearing a sapphire blue garment, the most vibrant color on the canvas.
