This painting is part of a series by Bellows in which he painted the river under snow. The slashing strokes and thick paint application accurately depicts the morning light dancing on freshly fallen snow. He, in this series, captures the awakening of the city: men shoveling last night snowfall, people going to work, and smoke beginning to pollute the pristine environment.
