About
In this artwork, called Survivor (Sobreviviente), Kahlo has painted another “ex-voto” work suggesting her own survival through her often depicted painful life. She says of the work, ” mirroring her personal situation, her loneliness, and survival in her own shaky world “. Kahlo and Diego Rivera collected Pre-Columbian artifacts. The pre-Columbian idol shown in the painting she suggests is ” symbolic of Mexico’s insecurity in what had become an increasingly volatile world “. Kahlo was known to have thoughts of suicide and experienced physical pain from polio, a severe accident, and other ailments in addition to emotional pain from her tumultuous relationship with Diego Rivera.
