About

In Girl from Tehuacán, Lucha María, or Sun and Moon, Kahlo paints common themes of Mexican culture and symbolism in her work. An indigenous girl sits in front of a split portrayal of night and day wrapped in a shawl suggesting the heat of the day is not upon her. Contrasting colors of warm and cool, dark and light are depicted on the left side with a moon and the Pyramid of the Moon at Teotihuacan, on the right side is the sun with the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan. The young girl holds a camouflaged model airplane, perhaps a symbol of the war given this was painted in 1942.
