About
Dorothy Hale was an American showgirl and Ziegfield dancer. A close friend of Hale’s commissioned Kahlo to paint a “recuerdo” (remembrance) portrait but was so alarmed upon receiving the composition and rather than destroying it made several changes to the painting. Among them she had an angel removed and edited the blood-red words describing the tragedy at the bottom of the painting. Kahlo who herself was extremely depressed and at times suicidal painted this in the ex-voto or retablo style.
