The Green Horse depicts a galloping horse amidst an obscured landscape made up of shapes. The painting is an abstract expression of Marc’s understanding of the natural and artificial. The horse seems to be captured in a moment of motions as it is running across the painting. Various identifiers of the landscape can be seen, for example the leaves on the bottom left and the strokes resembling a tree in the center. The colors and forms of the animal flow together and create a harmonious composition. The composition shows Marc’s understanding that there is a universal unity in both the natural and the artificial. Moreover, the horse represents the purity of life that exists in both these worlds.
