About
The Fox depicts a close of a fox, but the form of its body is fragmented diagonal lines and planes. This creates the illusion that the viewer is looking at the fox from broken glass. The influence of cubism can be seen in this artwork, as Marc breaks down the natural body of the fox into abstract and basic forms filled in by vibrant colors. Marc’s color theory relied on the idea that colors corresponded to different emotional and spiritual states. In this painting, he uses red and violence which prompts the viewer to engage with the artwork in a spiritual way rather than connecting it to its natural form.
