About
Deer in the Forest depicts several deer in a forest with a bird flying above the forest. The composition is also a hidden reflection of the increasing political tension in Germany before World War I. This is shown through the stillness of the deer contrasted with the bird midflight showing the looming threat of war. The influence of impressionism, cubism, and symbolism can be seen in this artwork. The forms of the deer are geometric and blend in with the background. Moreover, Marc used distinct brushstrokes that are often seen in impressionism to enhance the elements of the background and the deer. He also applied his color theory to this artwork, using primary colors to represent human nature, more specifically the contrasting nature of yellow and red, symbolizing joy and violence respectively.
