About
Deer at the Edge of the Forest depicts a group of deer in the forest. Animals were a common subject in Marc’s paintings because they represented purity, regeneration, and a sense of life. The artwork shows the impressionist influence on Marc’s style, as he focuses on using brushwork to capture the forms of the deer, their motion, and the background of the trees. He breaks down the elements of the painting to its basic forms and does not include many details. His use of the primary colors blue, yellow, and the subsequently green reflect his color theory of this scene representing masculinity, joy, and serenity.
