About
This 1953 work is a strong example of the black and white minimal brushstroke canvases of Kline’s mid-career work and mature style. As a key member of the abstract expressionist movement, Kline was frequently insistent on his work’s independence of real-world referents. In New York, N. Y., however, this titular phrase seems to invite relevant analysis for the work’s formal execution. The square-like and intersecting lines are reminiscent, and perhaps referential of, an array of different New York and city-related imagery, most immediately perhaps the city’s grid-like layout, asphalt streets, and construction scaffolding.
