About
This painting, Corinthian II (1961) is in Kline’s breakthrough abstract style. Heavily influenced by Willem de Kooning and other peers within the abstract expressionist movement, Kline’s black and white canvases represent the fullest realization of his turn toward abstraction. While considering an abstract expressionist himself, and while his works may appear to have the same spontaneity as a de Kooning or a Pollock, Kline typically worked carefully from sketches and studies. However, his use of house paint brushes and seemingly quick strokes adds an intriguing element of texture and imperfection, securing his painterly belongingness within the abstract expressionist school.
