About

This life-size portrait of Goya’s close friend and suggested lover, Maria del Pilar Teresa Cayetana de Silva Álvarez de Toledo (the Duchess of Alba), renders her and her dog in matching white and red. Often compared with one of Goya’s other portraits of the Duchess titled, Black Duchess (1797), The Duchess of Alba painting– otherwise known as The White Duchess– differs from its later counterpart in both color and posing. The pair share similar backgrounds of relatively flat terrain, but The White Duchess is portrayed straight-on, lifting her right arm to direct the eye down towards her small, hairy dog. Maria wears a laced white dress with red bows and details alongside gold arm jewelry. Her black curls softly fall from her head with a thickness, down to her red waist.
