About
Goya explores themes of death and deterioration in his Still Life with Golden Bream. Goya piles six lifeless fish out of water on a beach of crashing waves. Their scaley grey bodies gleam in the moonlight while the bulging yellows of their eyes impact a feeling of eeriness. This uneasiness is exacerbated by the prominent composition of the fish carcasses in the middle of the canvas, highlighting them in the light of the night. Goya depicts the six as freshly dead, as evidenced by the subtle red lines haloing the yellows of their eyes, indicating recent bulging.
