About
This self-portrait of Goya’s depicts him around the age of forty. Backgrounded by a window letting in intense light, Goya’s body is shadowed in darkness as he paints on a canvas and holds a palette of paint, seemingly looking directly at his subject– the viewer, another of Goya’s illusions. This breaks a fourth wall of sorts, and gives the illusion of a window– as the viewer stares at Goya the portrayed artist, he gazes back at them as a subject to paint. Artwork becomes artist.
