About
Portrait of Maria Teresa de Vallabriga on Horseback was done during Goya’s visit with the Infante Don Luis de Borbon, brother of Charles III. Goya was invited to stay with Don Luis’ family at the Arena de San Pedro in the summer of 1783, which inspired a multitude of portraits of the Don Luis family. This particular portrait is one of Don Luis’ wife, on horseback– Goya invoking the Velázquez-esque dramatic equestrian portrait. In Portrait of Maria Teresa de Vallabriga on Horseback, Goya renders Maria at a distanced side profile as she trots on her horse in a deep blue embellished dress accessorized with a feathered black hat. Backgrounded are majestic mountains on a clear summer’s day, the sun shining through clouds to spotlight Maria. The mane of the horse is painted with the same blue as Maria’s dress and her saddle, marrying the two as a cohesive riding pair.
