About
Ni mas ni menos. (Neither more nor less.) is one of the eighty prints in Goya’s 1799 ‘Los Caprichos’ series of aquatint etchings which aimed to condemn the society in which he lived. This etching is the 41st one in the series, as evident by the written number in the top right. Goya caricatures the roles of portrait artist and sitter by animalizing them, placing a donkey as the sitter and monkey as the painter. The donkey is a repeated motif in the series, and references the aristocratic class, while the monkey perhaps represents Goya’s feelings towards being a court painter.
