About
Los Chinchillas. (The Chinchillas.) is one of the eighty prints in Goya’s 1799 ‘Los Caprichos’ series of aquatint etchings which aimed to condemn the society in which he lived. This etching is the 50th one in the series, as evident by the written number in the top right. Two men in white straightjackets sit and stand with their mouths agape in an exhaustive pain, depicted with a dark, menacing figure who seemingly tortures them with his weaponized spoon. The two men appear to have their heads padlocked, contributing to their zombie-like natures. One man is rendered with a sword by his side in a sheath, which he blindly ignores as the dark figure threatens him with his spoon.
